Puente Genil, between two banks

Puente Genil, in the heart of Andalusia, land of open people. And as Manuel Machado would say: “Long light floods it, and when the sun comes to the west, it perfumes the air …”.

Its privileged geographical location, magnificent communications and the fact of belonging to unique cultural routes such as Tu Historia, Roman Villas de Hispania Network, Paths of Passion, Roman Bética Route, Ruta de Wine Montilla- Moriles or Via Verde del Aceite make the city a memorable and captivating place.

Puente Genil has a population of more than thirty thousand inhabitants. Located in one of the most unique buildings of the town, the Ex-Convent of the Order of San Francisco, highlights its magnificent cloister or baroque staircase by which we can ascend to the top floor where we find the set of museum rooms dedicated to our unique Holy Week, the universal “cantaor” Antonio Fernández Díaz “Fosforito” or the famous painter Pérez Almeda

From there, crossing Don Gonzalo Street, formerly the main thoroughfare of the old town, we can walk to the river and the stone bridge, the late medieval origin of Puente Genil. This is where the imposing Industrial Complex of La Alianza rises, old flour and electricity factories. Examples of nineteenth-century innovation that made it possible for the town to be the first in Andalusia to have street lighting by electric light. It is in the old town where we will find magnificent examples of industrial architecture, such as La Aurora, civil, such as the Circus Theater or religious, with parishes and hermitages where you can appreciate famous altarpieces and images.

Three kilometers to the northeast of the urban area of Puente Genil is the most attractive monumental complex of the city, the Archaeological Site of Fuente Álamo, a place with more than one thousand years of history. In the enclave we can admire some of the most important mosaics of the peninsula, which makes Fuente Álamo a reference of Roman art in Spain.

An essential meeting of the visitor is with the pontine gastronomy. Local products, unique and of high quality, such as the ever present quince jelly or the fine wines of Montilla-Moriles, all paired in a kitchen based on the gardens of Genil and the liquid gold of the best extra virgin olive oil.
